One difficult aspect of Touchon & Co from a collector's point of view is that it is not necessarily obvious whether the watch you are looking at is a genuine Touchon or not.

The reason for this is that they were commissioned to supply watches in various states of completion to a range of other companies.

The best known of these customers was Tiffany & Co and the majority, but not all 'Tiffany Touchons' are signed by Touchon on the movement and case and Tiffany on the dial and case and sometimes also on the movement as shown here.

However, they also supplied watches totally unsigned, most notably for a number of high grade jewellers across the USA, who clearly felt the need to emulate Tiffany & Co in their choice of quality but felt the need to claim the watches as their own. By supplying the movements unsigned, Touchon enabled the jeweller to place their own signature on the plates of the movement. One example of this is shown below, where interestingly the Touchon name does actually appear on the dial, but nowhere else. The movement being signed by the American firm of  F.F. Bonnet, Columbus, Ohio.  The movement here is particularly high grade at 21 jewels. The case is nickel and an exceptionally good fit, but is most likely a Depression era replacement for a solid gold item, the owner having fallen on hard times.  Touchons, because of their quality were all originally offered in precious metal cases.  I have never seen a genuine Touchon & Co case in anything other than Gold or Platinum.............. and in fact, the Wittnauer catalogue I have just taken delivery of and which dates from 1930 / 1931 lists options for the cases of Touchon watches as Solid 18 K Gold, Solid Platinum or Solid Platinum and Diamond only. There were no options at all for the provision of low grade cases.

The rarest type of Touchon pocket watch is undoubtedly the triple signed variety which is signed only by Touchon and no-one else on the case, movement and dial. They are extremely rare and although I have handled well over a hundred of their watches, only 3 were genuinely triple signed by Touchon.  Such watches are therefore highly prized, so keep a look out for a true rarity.  One thing that all Touchons have in common though is a quality of workmanship, materials and finish found only amongst the elite manufacturers. Most had solid gold alloy gear trains and massive ruby jewels....... I have several with centre jewels over 5mm diameter.
